Mines Financial Aid and Scholarships
Talk to the Mines Financial Aid Office to see how the financial aid and scholarships you already have through Mines can be used abroad. This usually depends on the type of program you choose (exchange, study abroad, faculty-led, etc.). Review our Getting Started page for more information about program types.
Education Abroad and Exchange Partner Scholarships
Each year, the Education Abroad Office awards small scholarships ($500 or less) to students with demonstrated financial need. Contact abroad@mines.edu for details.
Mines exchange partners also occasionally offer grants to students interested in studying at specific universities. Contact Mines Education Abroad (abroad@mines.edu) for details.

The Nancy Petry Grant is a supplemental award up to $5000 for a U.S. student currently enrolled in a graduate degree program for study abroad during the upcoming academic year. The award is intended to be used for supplementary coursework, seminars, conferences, or other academic-related costs that would enhance your educational or professional goals. Students should demonstrate some proficiency with the language of their chosen country if the program proposed is for a non-English speaking country.

The Adell & Hancock Fund is to provide supplemental support to a U.S. student who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for study abroad and is in need of additional funds to carry out their international educational plans for the upcoming academic year. Students should demonstrate proficiency with the language of their chosen country if the program proposed is for a non-English speaking country.
Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is an undergraduate program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy.
The Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad by U.S. undergraduate or graduate students. All eligible applicants have the option to either apply for a Regional Flagship Language Initiative or select/design their own study program.
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.
The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
Asher and Lyric Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship program aims to support current students wishing to experience new cultures and to broaden their perspectives.
The Bridging Scholarship program is accepting applications from American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan that begin in Fall 2021. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized credit-bearing exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000-$4,500, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from corporations, individuals, and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation
RISE stands for Research Internships in Science and Engineering. RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American, British and Irish universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. RISE Germany is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
Dante Alighieri Society of Denver Scholarships
The Dante Alighieri Society offers $1500 scholarships to Denver-area students who are studying Italian language, culture, or music abroad in Italy. Open to summer, semester, or academic year programs.
Under-represented students include students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups, first generation to college students, students from low income families and students with a history of overcoming adversity.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
Founded in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) empowers Latino families with the knowledge and resources needed to successfully complete a higher education, and provides scholarships and support services to as many exceptional Hispanic American students as possible.

NOGLSTP Out to Innovate Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Students in STEM
These scholarships are intended for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) programs who are either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or an active ally of the LGBTQ+ community.
Rotary District 5450 sponsors two candidates each year for a Rotary Scholarship. These candidates are selected by the District, based on the requirements of the Rotary Foundation. After selecting a candidate, District 5450 assists the scholar in applying to the Rotary Foundation. Each candidate must be accepted by The Rotary Foundation in order to be eligible for the scholarship. Please note that the Rotary Scholarships sponsored by Rotary District 5450 are for Graduate Scholars who live in, study in or work in District 5450 (generally the Denver/Boulder Metro Areas of Colorado USA) and are planning on studying outside the United States.

IEE Generation Study Abroad: Funding“IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants were made available for U.S. students from a broad range of backgrounds to make it possible for them to participate in academic, internship or service-learning experiences abroad . . . Travel Grants can be used not only for travel to and from the country of study, but also within the region, enabling students to make the most of their international experience.”
For over 48 years, The White House Fellowship has been America’s most prestigious program for leadership and public service. You may be a candidate or know qualified candidates who are interested in the Fellowship. This nonpartisan program is designed to provide emerging leaders an opportunity to experience the process of governing the nation while working alongside public servants at the highest levels of the Federal government.
The President’s Commission on the White House Fellowships chooses 11-19 professional men and women to spend a year in Washington, D.C. learning about public service leadership. Fellows are placed in the offices of Cabinet Secretaries, senior White House staff, and other high-level Executive Branch officials. In addition, they regularly meet in roundtable discussions with renowned leaders from the private and public sectors.
Notable alumni include: General Colin Powell, President of Univision Network’s César Conde, CNN Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, General Wesley Clark, and author Doris Kearns Goodwin.

RISE Internships in German PhD Labs
What is it?
RISE offers undergraduate students an opportunity to spend a summer working with doctoral students in Germany on research projects, in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, or physics. Interns receive stipends from DAAD to help cover living expenses and housing assistance is provided. RISE allows students to experience advanced research work while gaining practical experience in their fields of study.
To apply:
- Student must be enrolled at a US or Canadian university/college as a full-time student of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences or engineering
- Student must be an undergraduate who will have completed at least two years of a degree program by thte time of the RISE internship placement. Seniors must prove that they will still have undergraduate status upon their return to North America, otherwise they should apply for RISE Professional
Knowledge of German is not required for most positions but would be helpful for life outside of the laboratory. Students with little or no German proficiency have the opportunity to participate in a two-week intensive language course.
RISE Professional: Internships in German Industry
What is it?
RISE professional is a summer internship program designed to provide you with the opportunity to live and work in Germany, to gain confidence in your practical and professional skills, and to improve your German. You will benefit from working in international teams as well as getting a taste of the culture of the German workplace.
All participants receive stipends from DAAD and the host companies to help cover living expenses.
UAS7: Study and Internship Program
Do you want to study or intern in Germany? UAS7 offers the possibility to experience the practice-oriented education at our seven member universities of applied sciences for U.S. and Canadian undergraduates, as well as students from our partner universities in Brazil. Some graduate student opportunities are available also.
In three different program lines, students can choose to study and/or intern in Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Münster or Osnabrück, our seven top university locations throughout Germany. Please choose if you wish to study for a semester through our Study Program (SP), do an internship (IP), or if you want to go for the combined Study and Internship (SIP) experience for a year.
